Moldavite

we flame, we roar

split the earth’s upper reaches

we burn

we burn up

the blue planet’s cool

she slows us

we slide

we slide in

until all that’s left is this:

bottle-green, brittle

bubbled and cratered

hardened

hardened to rock

our trail, our spore

where we gashed is a taste of space

Cometary Panspermia

a near noise, like nothing else

a blare of sound in the sky over Kottayam

houses rattled, then sheets of scarlet

fell from the heavens – no normal shower

across the district, for two strange months:

irregular rain, our clothes were crimson

the water in our wells garnet red

not dust, nor grains of pollen

(we looked long through microscopes)

not blood from a doomed flock of bats

but cup-shaped cells, thick-walled

no nuclei, no DNA

just carbon and oxygen, traces of iron

the building blocks for basic life

we wondered quietly: an alien landing

meandering down by meteorite

a microbe-bearing comet scrap

mixed with clouds above Kerala

or the gods looking down on the landscape

hey! – today looks perfect for painting
